Buffalo, NY: In 2016, the nonprofit Wellness Institute and community partners established a goal of 40 million steps to be taken by citizens of the region throughout the year. By leading walks in Erie County parks, shopping malls, the Buffalo-Niagara Medical campus and downtown Buffalo, the Wellness Institute and community partners, once again achieved their goal. Wellness Institute affiliate Explore Buffalo led the way contributing 36 million steps to the community goal. Refresh Magazine, Visit Buffalo Niagara , the BNMC and the City B-WELL Program are among partners. (Additional partners always welcome.)

Wellness Institute Executive Director, Philip L. Haberstro noted: “In 2016 our “Walking to Wellness” initiative was recognized as a community best practice by the NYS Department of Health. Additionally, our staff member Sarah K. Martin was awarded an “America Walks” fellowship to strengthen our capability to improve walkability. Our Walking to Wellness 2017 goal of 50 MILLION STEPS will be announced in mid-February along with the Spring release of a new walkability assessment DVD and toolkit. We are working strategically to increase physical activity by improving community walkability,Bikability and trails.”

Persons interested in walking can join any of the Wellness Institute’s walks to have their steps counted toward the 2017 Walking to Wellness goal total.
