WNY WALKS! ANNOUNCES 2020 COMMUNITY SAFE STEPS GOAL: 250 MILLION!
BUFFALO, NY: The Wellness Institute’s WNY WALKS! Initiative and its community partners announced the 2020 Walking to Wellness Initiative goal of 250+ MILLION safe steps! Our region achieved and surpassed the 2019 goal by walking/rolling 126+ MILLION steps! The Walking to Wellness Initiative supports national and local programs, including America Walks, the NYS Prevention Agenda, Erie County’s Million Hearts Initiative, the Healthiest Districts Initiative, Age Friendly Buffalo Population Health Collaborative’s Healthy Communities Coalition, and the US Surgeon General’s Call to Action promoting walking and walkable communities. Participants in 2019’s successful initiative included: City of Buffalo employees, the Buffalo Niagara Visitor Center, Explore Buffalo, Imagine Greater Buffalo, students from local colleges, and many more!
The Wellness Institute’s Walking to Wellness Initiative is recognized as a ‘community best practice’ by NYS Department of Health! Executive Director of the Institute, Phil Haberstro, noted “Our efforts have been strategic, comprehensive, and inclusive – everyone is a pedestrian, and walking or rolling safely are fundamental human rights.”
The Walking to Wellness 2020 goal of a quarter of a BILLION SAFE STEPS supports the WNY WALKS! Initiative, which offers free walkability assessment, walking club toolkits, and policy advocacy for Pedestrian Master Plans. Upcoming walks with community partners occur throughout the year. Walkers may enjoy free guided, fun and moderately-paced walks at these locations in 2020:
– W.O.W. Wednesday Walks: January-February at 12pm walks meeting in City Hall 1st floor lobby
– Reflective Walks at Delaware Park: Held March through November on the first Sunday of the month, 10:45 am to 11:30 am. Walks are 1-to-2 miles and begin and end at Hoyt Lake, Marcy Casino area. Co-sponsored by the Center for the Study of Art & Architecture, History & Nature.
– National Walk at Lunch Day: Spring Date to be Confirmed – Downton Buffalo
– Downtown Noon-time Wellness Walks: Every Wednesday starting May – leading into the WNY WALKS! Second Annual Walkability Summit in June!
